Failure

Feeling an overwhelming sense of failure these days. I’m generally ok with failure and making mistakes. Failing is a leaning opportunity.

Most of the time though there are there is usually a mix in my life. Some areas where I feel I’m succeeding but others not so much. This is ok I can concentrate on the things going well and make effort to fix the areas I’m failing.

Right now I’m having a hard time seeing the successes. Parenting, career, health, finances, all of these areas of my life which need serious work.

Overall I know my life is privileged which makes me failing in these areas all the more painful.

  1. Hey, buddy! You’re not a faillure at all! You’re one of the best persons I had the opportunity to work with! You’re an example of a great professional, great colleague, great father! Super kind and generous! Besides, you laugh at your Brazilian friends’ bad jokes! Seriously, don’t let the difficulties of life bring you down! No matter how privileged we are, life is never easy! Don’t feel bad! Focus on the good things! And don’t be so hard on yourself! You’re great, Sandy!

  2. I’m sorry you’re having a tough time. I enjoy seeing your Facebook updates with your children. It’s clear how much you love your family. You have a lot on your plate, as a dad of 4 and a husband and a provider. I don’t want to call it normal, but I do think it’s common, to feel that there is somehow a better version of yourself that you are failing to live up to. Even the advice to “just do your best” can feel like a lot of pressure. What if it feels like “your best” should be somehow more than you’re currently doing? So my advice is, just keep putting one foot in front of the other. Forgive yourself for not being the perfect person you envision. Remind yourself that the way you feel right now is probably not how you will feel tomorrow, or next week.

My cheer-up strategies are, in no particular order:

    * Drink a glass of water, ideally with a Nuun Energy tablet (or similar product). Hydration and B vitamins and a bit of caffeine can be a quick mood lifter.

    * Go for a short walk/run with some good music and see if you find any new Pokemon along the way. Don’t set out to break any speed/endurance records. Just get your heart rate up for about 20 minutes.

    * Look at kitten gifs online ( https://www.tumblr.com/tagged/kitten-gif ) or even better, if time permits, visit a shelter and cuddle some kittens. (Warning: slight risk with this strategy of coming home with an 80-pound blind senior dog.)

    * Color with a kid. I find the very intricate coloring pages to be intimidating. I prefer coloring something simple when I want a short break, Like coloring one pony. Colored pencils (rather than crayons) are really nice for this. http://www.imalue.com/my-little-pony-printable-coloring-pages/

    * Play with makeup/hair. It can be fun to see a different you than the everyday you, looking back in the mirror. (I don’t know if you have makeup or hair products. These are *my* cheer-up tips, you may need to improvise 😉

    Hugs to you 🙂

  3. “Failing is a leaning opportunity.” – Theres your answer right there! Lean into that feeling, breath, and pay attention to the resistance that arises. It will pass, Sandy. As a Father of 4 children myself, your posts inspire me. Thanks for that!
