We woke up to find out that schools are closed again today, the third day in a row, due to snow and road conditions.
Noah was up first can came to check if there was school and was excited about the news and delivered the news to two of his sisters. He came back to let us know how they took it describing and acting it out at the same time.
Ella, in a depressed voice asked, really? Then hung her head in disappointment and walked back into her room.
Caile, excited with a smile, gave an approving nod of the head and declared, good I’m going back to bed.
Yesterday I didn’t move very much. Right up until about 9pm my Fitbit was only showing about 1200 steps, that’s pretty lazy. Earlier in the day when it was even lower than that I was chatting with my team about how I should go out for a walk but that I was being a wimp about the cold. Trying to assure them that I wasn’t always so lazy, and afraid of the weather, I shared this picture from a few years ago when the cold didn’t stop me and I’d go out running in about anything.
This morning my teammate Guga shared this, I think he was trying to make me feel better about being such a baby about going out in the cold that he tried to make me look like a badass. Even funnier this was the only first person shooter style game I ever played any amount of, I was terrible at it.
Today is the last day of Christmas break before the kids head back to school. We decided to head to the beach for a little walk. It was pretty windy and cold, but still very nice.
The last big wind storm we had changed the layout of the land. The bridge in one of the pictures below used to take you from the parking lot area onto the shore with a stream running underneath it. The stream doesn’t go under it anymore and you can just walk onto the shore.
Yesterday was such a nice day we couldn’t not get out an enjoy a little bit of the above zero temperatures. It was just Caile, Noah, and I so we went for a walk at the marsh and enjoyed a little treat afterwards.
Today we are visiting Ross Farm Museum for their annual winter frolic event. As we were walking from the car into the snow we were talking to the kids about the different activities that were on.
There is sledding, snow shoes, horse sleigh rides, and hot chocolate. At the mention of hot chocolate Caile pipes up:
That’s my favourite winter activity!
Awoken shortly after getting to bed
Winds from the winter rain storm trying to get in
Windows rattle and the whole house sways
All glowing lights suddenly flash off
Laying here awake, thankful
Thankful for a warm safe home
Thankful for a still sleeping family
Thankful it’s all rain and not snow
Morning will come soon
Hopeful sleep will as well
That dawn will bring peaceful weather
And the lights and heat will once again be on
It’s been a couple days since I’d been for a run and I was missing it. The weather has been cold and snowing so I wasn’t looking forward to going out. Today I was missing it though and decided I needed to go out.
Dressed up in a few layers and put on some of my new winter gear to head out and it was actually really nice. I didn’t feel too cold at all even though it was around -11. There was one short length in my loop where the wind was blowing the snow right in my face and that wasn’t great but other than that I didn’t mind it at all.
Things did go a bit slower as there were some slippery spots and snow built up where the plows hadn’t been by for a while. Took it easy and didn’t fall or even really slip at all.
Now that I have the first one out of the way, Jen is convinced I’m crazy, but I feel good about heading out running in the snow now. It was actually really relaxing and peaceful.
Since February 16th I’ve had a web cam setup in my office window looking out over my backyard. It’s set to capture an image every half hour when it is light out.
The camera is not great so the quality isn’t very good but it’s still pretty cool watching the snow disappear and the grass take over. This time lapse shows the images from February 16th until May 6th 2015.
Feeling like I had been trapped in the house too much lately after the stormy weather I finally decided to get out side and do something besides move snow.
It started by making a quick detour on the way to the grocery store to my favourite walking trail. I didn’t make it far because I was just in jeans and boots but it looked very nice and so I decided to get out a bit more.
Luckily good family friends have snow shoes so Sam and I took a long lunch break and went for a walk through the woods. It was the first time I was really on snow shoes. I was surprised how much of a workout it was.
It was a beautiful day out and just what I needed.
